REVIEW: Agents of Mayhem
Summary: From the team that brought you the Saints Row franchise, Volition are back with a new IP to hopefully satiate that open world fun loving third person action hunger you’ve been craving.
Concept: The agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M (Multinational Agency Hunting Evil Masterminds) are tasked to stop the super villain organization L.E.G.I.O.N. (the League of Evil Gentleman Intent on Obliterating Nations) from destroying the world’s nations. Set in Korea’s major city Seoul (A very futuristic version no less) this is where you will be playing out your heroic feats. Basic in premise but the animated cutscenes make the story somewhat engaging along with decent voice acting and writing.
Who looks at this and gets blown away
Graphics: Generic. The visuals sport a cel-shaded and very bland look. The presentation is quite slick but everything just feels so empty about this world. The characters themselves are quite unique in their look and presentation but think of a more polished Borderlands but with no real grit or detail to it. Their are some really nice particle effects though so I will give credit there but besides that it’s just a very bland looking game.
Gameplay: Again, generic. Take out all the fun and crazy things from the saints row franchise, especially no. 3 and 4 and that’s Agents of Mayhem in a nutshell, just with more tight shooting mechanics. I honestly found this game a chore to play because of how mediocre it was, there is no really cool hook or game mechanic that makes it stand out. It’s just a boring run and gun game going from point A to B with a triple jump and dash thrown in. The individual characters have their own little tricks and unique skills but nothing is so drastic that it blows you away or even stands out.
The super exciting hub
Sound: Very light in the music department with nothing standing out and honestly I can’t even remember if there was many tunes at all apart from mostly ambient background noise. The one saving grace in the audio department is the voice acting which is quirky and charming and each character has their own flavour. Sound effects are adequate too and get the job done. Again nothing amazing.
Awesomeness: Nothing. Absolutely nothing stands out about this game that sets it apart which is what our awesomeness category is about. Sometimes even a bad game can have something cool/different that you haven’t seen before but again Agents of Mayhem is so bland and boring that there is absolutely nothing I haven’t seen in a game before and even then it doesn’t even excel at anything I’ve seen previously.
About as good as it gets
Final Word: The mid tier games are back and this is a prime example. If this game came out at say $30 then I’d say it was a decent effort and maybe worth your time, but for a full priced game I can’t recommend it at all. Honestly I have played $5 indie titles that have more charm then this. A real disappointment from Volition, especially considering I loved the Saints Row games and even taking that out of the equation I am still a huge 3rd person shooter/action fan and it doesn’t satisfy at all, it just doesn’t have anything to stand on.
