CJay’s Retro Review- Super Mario Kart
Systems: SNES, Wii Virtual Console, Wii U Virtual Console
Year of Release: 1993
Ah Mario Kart! One of the system sellers on any console it appears. How does the first entry stack up?
Super Mario Kart was released two decades ago and was a very early game in the kart racing genre. It stars, as the name suggests, many of the Mario world characters. You can play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, Donkey Kong Jr., Yoshi, Bowser and Koopa Troopa. There are three difficulties: 50cc, 100cc and 150cc among four cups. The cups are Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special cup. Special is unlocked after getting gold on the first three cups in 50cc. Each cup has 5 races with 5 laps. You must place at 4th position or above in each race in order to progress. You will lose a life for every race your do not place in.
The game features a GP mode, Time Trial and multiplayer modes. Multiplayer has a GP mode, Match Race (with two players racing head to head) and a Battle Mode. The Battle Mode has 4 courses and you have three balloons which are popped by power ups the other players can use. If you lose all three, you are out of the match.
The fun of Mario Kart comes, not just from learning the courses and controlling your drifting kart but from using the items to cause mayhem, from Mushrooms that give you a speed boost to bananas that spin out your enemies. It makes for exciting races and the multiplayer modes only add to the fun.
There is a saying that a person’s first Mario Kart will be their favourite and mine was Mario Kart 64. It is superior to the original in my mind but the SNES game has its own charm. Super Mario Kart is an excellent game for its time which holds up very well.
